Sports Arb
A sports arbitrage is possible
when the number of sporting outcomes is small [e.g. win, draw, lose]. Typical
examples include Football, Tennis, American football, Cricket, Rugby etc.
An arbitrage
is possible when different bookmakers offer different betting odds for the
same sports event. The punter can take advantage of the price differential
whilst not needing to know anything about the sport.
e.g FA Cup : Manchester Utd vs Exeter
Two bookmakers A and B are offering different odds on the result of the match
::
BOOKMAKER A: 1.35/1 : Manchester Utd to win
BOOKMAKER B: 7/1 : Draw odds
BOOKMAKER B: 15/1 : Exeter win odds
By splitting
the original stake [say £100] it is possible to guarantee a profit no
matter what the outcome of the football match.
i.e. Man Utd £77.951 x 1.35/1 = £105.23
Draw £15.033 x 7/1 = £105.23
Exeter £7.016 x 15/1 = £105.23
This is a risk free sports arbitrage example providing a profit of £5.23
[5.23%].
